Current Show July 3 – 26 A selection of 30 works of art from 96 entries submitted representing some of the best artwork by residents of the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County and Gallery members. Linda Jansma: Juror Linda Jansma is the Curator of The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa and has been with the Gallery since 1980. She is the author of many catalogues associated with touring exhibitions originating from The McLaughlin Gallery. She is also a well-known Juror. She earned her Master of Arts Degree, Art History at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, in 1986 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Queen’s University in 1985. Juror’s Statement: I would never say that the task of a juror is more difficult than that of the artist, but it does come a close second! Years of looking at art have given me some basis for choices made, but many choices are subjective. As with anyone who looks at art, I just like some pieces better than others. To all whose work was not chosen, I encourage you to keep at it. If the Gallery’s space had not been limited, there would definitely be more work included. And to all whose work was chosen, and particularly the Award winners, my sincere congratulations. 2008 Show Award Winners People's Choice Award Artist's Statement: I first saw the technique of making “paintings” when I visited the studio of artist, Jane Selbie, during the Haliburton County Studio Tour several years ago. When I saw what she was doing with fabric, interpreting the landscapes all around her in the same way as other artists use paint or any other medium, I was fascinated. She gives workshops, and I spent several very rewarding weekends with her and other students learning the basics of the technique of using fabric, scissors and glue to make pictures. It helps that I am a fabric ‘junkie” and have a huge stash, the result of my other hobby, quilting, and I'm always on the lookout for more fabric, thinking this piece will make a great sky, or that piece would be great for tree trunks, or another is just right for leaves or grass. I am committed to using recycled fabrics, either leftovers from other projects or picked up at thrift stores. Old shirts and other old clothing are a great source of material. I have also been taking art classes for the past four years, both through the Lindsay Gallery and the Haliburton School of the Arts, in watercolour, acrylics and other media, and the principles learned in those classes apply to this medium as well. I love sumach trees in the fall, and so I decided that their brilliant colours would make a great picture. It is a slow process, but very rewarding indeed. Julie Hale
